 Ivan Arnold (1805 - 1891)
|
In 1860 Ivan
Arnold opened up a school for the deaf in Moscow. I.
Arnold lost his ability to hear when he was a little boy.
After being educated in Germany he returned to Russia and
opened up a school for the deaf in St. Petersburg and
later in Moscow, where he moved together with five of his
pupils. Later the world-famous founder of the Tretyakov Art Gallery Pavel Tretyakov
became the guardian of the school and in 1900 the school
became the Arnold-Tretyakov school for the deaf. |

In that same year F. Rau who was the headmaster of the
school from 1899 to 1918, together with his wife N. Rau,
founded the first kindergarten in Europe for deaf
children, which marked the beginning of this type of
tuition system for younger children in Russia.
In 1918 the school became state institute and was renamed
into the Moscow Institute for the Deaf. After the 2nd
World War the Institute was moved to a different site and
changed its name for the School for the Deaf. |

 In
1963 the school was moved to a larger building on 39
Parshin Street and became known as "kindergarten -
school - boarding school" No. 1838, the headmaster
of which is now Mr. S. Krivovyaz, an Honoured
teacher of the Russian Federation.
