History
For most British families, this is the most important festival of the year, it combines the Christian celebrity of the birth of Christ, with the traditional festivities of winter.
Different legends passed across the ages to make the present day Santa Claus. Immigrant settlers brought Father Christmas to the United States . Father’s name was gradually changed to Santa Claus, from the Dutch name for Father Christmas, which is Sinter Class. Although he has origins in Norse and pre-Christian mythology, Santa Claus took shape in the United States. Americans gave Santa Claus a white beard, dressed him in a red suit and made him a cheery old man with red cheeks and a twinkle in his eye.
A Christmas tree is one of the main symbols of Christmas in most homes. Relatives and friends may join in trimming the tree with lights and tinsel. Presents are placed under the tree. On Christmas Eve families open their presents. Many children believe that Santa arrives on Christmas Eve in a sleigh pulled by reindeer and brings presents. Some children hang up stockings so Santa can fiil them with candy, fruits and other small gifts.
