Historian, Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1872), rector of Moscow University. He was born in the family of priest. Graduated from Moscow University, in 1842-1844 lived abroad, from 1847 - professor of Moscow University. His main work:"The History of Russia since Ancient Times" in about 29 volumes (1851-1879).
