Historian. He was born in the family of a priest in Penza Gubarniya. Studied at Penza theological seminary. Later he left the seminary and entered Moscow University, the historical and philological faculty. From 1873 he taught studients at the Moscow theological seminary and Moscow University. He was a member of different scientific societies. His main work was "Russian History Manual".
