All of these images contain a "red" and a "blue" magnitude. These are used because supernovae change color, starting out very blue, and becomming red. Thus stars which are red will have a larger red magnitude than blue magnitude. It you are comparing the brightness of a new supernova, you should use the blue magnitudes. For an older supernova, use the red ones.
These images are done on the DSS image scale. Most Messier galaxies are done on a 2/3 scale, because the were large. The scale is as follows:
Full scale : 1.007" / pixel 2/3 scale : 1.51" / pixel
