Getting Started

Obtaining Member Access to the ASRAS Website
Now that you've joined the Astronomy Section, you may want to do some exploring online to learn what's in store for you as a new member. Whether you're looking for club resources, information about learning opportunities, or a way to meet other members of the club, the ASRAS website contains pages of information that you can now gain private member access to by requesting a username and password. All current members are entitled (and encouraged) to obtain a website user account. Your user account can be personalized with your astronomy-related background, information about equipment that you own; and users also have the ability to upload images for discussion or just to display. Our website is also equipped with a member discussion forum that you are welcomed to use. To receive your username and password for RochesterAstronomy.org, browse to the Contact Us page, and use the contact form to email the webmaster. Be sure to enter the same personal details that you submitted with your membership form (most importantly, your email address) while making your request--our webmaster will need to verify your membership with that information.

Once you've received your credentials to the ASRAS website, you may want to subscribe to the ASRAS e-mail list, which is best known as THE REFLECTOR. It's a great way to stay in touch with all things happening related to ASRAS activities, events, impromptu obser ving sessions, etc, and it's the easiest way to stay up-to-date on club news, updates and announcements without changing your daily lifestyle! Club announcements that are made through the Reflector come in the form of a group e-mail addressed to ever y subscriber on the list. In addition to receiving news first-hand, subscribers can use the reflector to send messages that are relevant to the entire list, as long as the guidelines for doing so are followed. The Reflector guidelines will be sent to you once you've been added to the list. To subscribe to the Reflector, use your website credentials to log into your account at rochesterastronomy.org. Then browse to the Contact Us page, and you will see instructions for joining the Reflector now that you are logged in as a member of ASRAS.

ASRAS on Facebook
Our Facebook page is a relatively new communication resource and ser ves as an experimental means of connectivity. So far it has ser ved as way for the public to "meet" and ask questions of some of our members, an outlet to post reminders for upcoming events (whenever possible), a place for our astrophotographers to post images, a fun and informal venue to spark up astronomy-related dialogue, or share and discuss current events in astronomy. The ASRAS Facebook page address is: Facebook/ASRAS.Club

Through gracious donations from Marion and Max Farash and the Louis S. Wolk Foundation, ASRAS has been able to acquire a large piece of land away from the city lights. Our site, named The Marion and Max Farash Center for Obser vational Astronomy consists of an education center, maintenance building and eight working obser vatories on a 17-acre plot of land in Ionia, NY. Here is a quick inventor y of the features on-site: · Our main building, the Louis Wolk Education Center, contains a classroom, librar y, kitchen, lounge, computer lab, restrooms, and a large deck. · Two obser vatories contain large aperture telescopes suitable for viewing deep sky objects under the dark skies of Ionia. · One telescope is more specialized for lunar and planetar y obser vations. · Two telescopes are computer driven and usually dedicated to astrophotography. · The newest constructed obser vator y is dedicated to solar astronomy. · There are numerous concrete pads located on the grounds complete with electric power for members who wish to bring their own equipment. · The property has a number of marked hiking trails and offers camping to family and scouting groups. Each month, on a pre-selected Saturday or Sunday, we invite the entire membership to the Farash Center for an Open House. This regular club gathering is offered specifically for members to request and be trained to use club equipment, building procedures, or to help with any club projects. The monthly Open Houses are also a great way to get acquainted with other members since there is no schedule or planned program for the day.
If you wish to use the Farash Center grounds for obser ving, and need vehicle access to the entrance road, contact the current Site Manager for the gate code. The current Site Manager's name and phone number is printed on the latest newsletter (The Rochester Astronomer); or you can ask the Membership Chairperson for this info.

Getting Involved

A Word about Outreach & Volunteering
Because of our love for astronomy, ASRAS has a long tradition of sharing its passion and utilizing its resources to educate the community. Many of the events that we host are focused on doing this, with club members at the forefront in order to make this happen. These events are a high priority of the Astronomy Section. We have many reasons for placing such a high importance on outreach. At the basic level, you could say that our outreach has built this club and its resources. Education is the most valuable thing you can give, so over the years as we stay dedicated to community outreach, the community usually gives back with donations that fund our operations. Without these donations, our club would be ver y different place, and our annual dues would be MUCH higher. There are many other things that we rely on our members for; not just outreach. Regular maintenance like mowing the the lawn is all done by members, for example. However, consider one of these few fundamental outreach and volunteer opportunities a tr y, but keep in mind that these are only a few ideas--we encourage new members to get involved in whatever activities they might enjoy.

Saturday nights at the Strasenburgh
The Strasenburgh Planetarium has two telescopes on the roof (shown left) that our club members operate on clear Saturday nights. Anyone can stop by to have a look, and all of our members are welcomed to help. As long as the sky is at least mostly clear, obser ving is always scheduled ever y Saturday night from 9:00pm - 10:30pm. Contact Jim Seidewand (585-703-9876) beforehand to let him know you're coming; if you can't contact him for some reason, just climb the 60 stairs to the roof deck via the entrance to the tower next to the rear door of the planetarium. If the weather is questionable, and you're unsure if obser ving is taking place, call the planetarium box office at 585-697-1945 after 7:30PM.

Bring your own scope to a Public Star Par ty
In addition to obser ving sessions at the planetarium, ASRAS holds public star parties during the months when the snow doesn't fly. These are informal obser ving events where members bring their own telescopes and invite the public to come and take a look. If you own a telescope that can be transported, this is a great way for beginners to get involved. There is at least one star party per month, and they normally alternate between Mendon Ponds Park on the East side of town and Northampton Park on the West side. Again, contact Jim Seidewand (585-703-9876) beforehand to let him know you're coming.

Become an ASRAS Board Member or Attend a Board Meeting
In addition to voluteering for outreach events, accepting a role as a board member is a great way to make a difference and get involved. In fact, there are even a few benefits to joining the board. Board members have the ability to help shape the future direction and purpose of ASRAS, and they also hear about unique opportunities before they are formalized and announced to the rest of the club. The Board is ALWAYS looking for help, so if you're interested, you can speak with a current board member at any ASRAS activity or meeting. Also, you should know that any member of ASRAS is allowed to attend a board meetingseven if you're not a board member. So if you're curious, but not completely sure, consider attending a board meeting to see how things workthis also a perfect way to learn about other unique opportunities to help with.
