General Information for Visitors or Visiting Scientists
VISITING SCIENTISTS QUARTERS / LODGING
The AO operates (21) twenty-one on-site VSQ rooms that are available for visiting telescope users, official Arecibo Observatory visitors, as well as visiting scientists. Single or double occupancy The AO maintains (12) twelve, single/double occupancy rooms, which are located a short walking distance from the site main-gate, as well as (5) five additional rooms on site. Daily rate: $72.00, tax included. Bachelor units There are (2) two, single bedroom cabins, located on site, with equipped kitchens. Daily rate: $85.00, tax included. Family units There are (2) two, single family cabins, located on site, which include (2) two bedrooms, living room and equipped kitchens. Daily rate: $110.00, tax included.

RESERVATIONS
Housing reservations may be made through the AO reservations system, http://www.naic.edu/housing/userform.html.

CHECK-IN
Check-in time is 3:00pm. Upon arrival on site, AO Security will complete your Check-In Registration Form, give you your room key and escort you to your room.


BILLING
Payment for lodging expenses should be made prior to departure from the AO. Natalia PiЯero, in office 101 of the Administration Building, is available Monday thru Friday, between the hours of 9:00am and 5:30pm. If your departure date is on a weekend, please settle your bill in advance or visit the Visitor Center Galaxy Shop for payment.

CHECK-OUT
Checkout time is 12:00pm. Please contact Natalia PiЯero, at extension 215, to request a late checkout. Keys are to be returned to AO Security upon departure.

TRANSPORTATION
The AO does not provide airport transportation. However, if transportation is needed, we can assist in arranging taxi service with an external resource. Fee will vary. Request for this service should be included in the housing reservation form, included in the comments section.

HOUSEKEEPING
The Visiting Scientist Quarters will be made-up prior to check-in and will be provided with adequate towels, wash cloths, soap, etc. For visitors staying a week or more, rooms will be cleaned and linens changed once per week. If any requests are to be made, you may contact our Housekeeping personnel at extension 279.

AMMENETIES
Laundry area Coin operated washing machines and dryers are available for use. Hours: Weekdays, after 4:30pm; weekends, all day. Laundry detergent is available for purchase. Please contact Housekeeping personnel at extension 279.

Kitchenette A kitchenette is located next to the site cafeteria. Open during all hours. Pool


A large swimming pool is located on site and is available for use by visitors. Hours: Monday thru Sunday, 12:00pm until 10:00pm. Basketball court A basketball court is located on site and is available for use by visitors. Open during all hours. Please contact AO Security at extension 222 for more information.

CAFETERIA
The AO site cafeteria is located close to the Administration building. Hours of service: Monday thru Friday, 7:00am ­ 3:00pm.

IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY

Anti-Harassment Declaration for the Arecibo Observatory

As a Large NSF Facility, the Arecibo Observatory must provide an environment that encourages the free expression and exchange of scientific ideas. in pursuit of that environment, the managing partners of the AO are committed to the philosophy of equality of opportunity and treatment for all staff and visitors regardless of gender, gender identity or expression, race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion or religious belief, age, marital status, sexual orientation, disabilities, veteran status, or any other reason not related to scientific merit. It is the responsibility of all employees, visitors, the chairperson of any AO committee, the organizers of any AO meeting, and the Visitor Center staff to ensure that this declaration is followed. Harassment, sexual or otherwise, is a form of misconduct that undermines the integrity of Arecibo Observatory activities. It is the position of the Arecibo Observatory that all participants in AO activities will enjoy an environment free from all forms of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.


Definition of Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment refers to unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Behavior and language that are welcome or acceptable to one person may be unwelcome/offensive to another, this can come from someone of the opposite sex or same sex. Consequently, individuals must use discretion to ensure that their words and actions communicate respect for others. This is especially important for those in positions of authority since individuals with lower rank or status may be reluctant to express their objections or discomfort regarding unwelcome behavior. Definition of Other Harassment Harassment on the basis of any other protected characteristic is also strictly prohibited. This conduct includes, but is not limited to: epithets, slurs or negative stereotyping; threatening, intimidating or hostile acts; denigrating jokes and display or circulation of written or graphic material that denigrates or shows hostility of aversion toward an individual or group. Reporting and Additional Information The Arecibo Observatory Human Resources Director, Luz LСpez, can assist all employees and visitors with any harassment issues and claims. All harassment issues will be treated promptly with appropriate confidentiality and the onsite Human Resources office will coordinate with all partner organization in assisting with a harassment claim.
