Dr. Colin Lonsdale received a Doctorate in Radio Astronomy, in 1981, from the Victoria University of Manchester, UK (Jodrell Bank Observatory) He currently holds the position of Director and Principal Research Scientist, MIT Haystack Observatory, Westford, MA. His research interests include active galaxies, galaxy evolution, extragalactic radio sources, galactic and extragalactic masers, low frequency radio arrays, radio imaging techniques.

Abstract
Arecibo Observatory supports a broad agenda within a well-defined science and technical theme, and is physically remote from parent organizations necessitating extensive on-site science, engineering and support staffing. Closely parallel arrangements can be found at Jodrell Bank in the UK, and at Haystack Observatory in rural Massachusetts. Having spent 5 years at Jodrell Bank, and 25 years at Haystack, holding positions from graduate student and postdoc, through staff member, project leader, and currently Director, I have gained certain perspectives on the challenges and opportunities presented by evolving circumstances at such institutions. Addressing such challenges and energetically capitalizing on the opportunities is integral to a successful reinvention of Arecibo. I will articulate these perspectives, and offer examples of changes at Haystack, met by responses of varying effectiveness.
