Proposal Title: Coincident TIMED and Arecibo Cluster Instrument Observations of the Meso-
sphere and Lower Thermosphere
ABSTRACT:
We propose to use the Arecibo ISR and optical instruments for coincident observations with the TIMED satellite.
The proposed observations are aimed at the following scienti c objectives: 1. cross-calibrations and climatology of
mesosphere temperature; 2) obtain the average ion mass pro le in the D-region and study its diurnal and seasonal
variation; 3) study the tides and waves by combining radar and optical observations; 4) study the dynamics and
composition associated with sporadic E layers. The total radar observing time requested is ~ 250 hours and the lidar
time requested is about 30 nights.
