Proposal Title: Probing the magnetic eld topology in millisecond pulsars
ABSTRACT:
At least three types of theoretical models have been developed to describe the magnetic eld topology in
millisecond pulsar magnetospheres, ranging from distorted magnetic eld con gurations due to the recycled nature
of these sources to traditional polar-cap emission and emission from outer gaps. The magnetic eld topology is a
topic of considerable interest due to its impact on the evolutionary history and the statistics of this stellar
population. The results of our three year single-frequency monitoring of a large sample of millisecond pulsars
indicated that their magnetospheres do not simply represent scaled versions of these of normal pulsars. Moreover,
some millisecond pulsar pro les do not comply with the predictions of classi cation schemes based on normal
pulsars. Instead, they form categories of their own. With this proposal we suggest a systematic multifrequency
survey of millisecond pulsar polarimetry, making use of the improved high frequency sensitivity of the Arecibo
telescope and the widebandwidth instrumentation available, aiming at very ng our preliminary results and also, a)
determining the evolution of the magnetic inclination of pulsars, b) probing the location of the emission region and
its radial dimensions, and c) establishing the nature of the magnetic eld topology in MSP magnetospheres.
