Studies of Relativistic Gravitation and Pulsar Physics with the First Binary

Pulsar B1913+16
ABSTRACT:
We propose a two week observing campaign on the original binary pulsar, B1913+16. This double neutron star system remains an excellent testing ground for relativistic gravitation and has been observed regularly at Arecibo since its discovery. In addition, it has become a very important ob ject for pulsar emission studies because geodetic precession changes the line-of-sight to the pulsar surface, allowing a two-dimensional pulsar beam map to be built up over time. We propose a campaign of timing, polarimetric, and HI absorption observations in order to (i) improve the precision of the measured relativistic orbital decay rate, (ii) improve constraints on the relativistic Shapiro delay measurements, (iii) constrain the distance to the pulsar with new HI measurements, (iv) extend our map of the two-dimensional emission beam pattern, and (v) measure the beam pattern at a wide range of radio frequencies.
