AO40 Feasibility Study Focal Region Mapping Experiment

The AO40 Feasibility Study Focal Region Mapping Experiment will provide experimental data that supports the specification and design of an L-band phased array feed (PAF) for Arecibo. The ob jectives are to map the sensitivity of formed beams as a function of x-y position in the AO focal plane over roughly a 1.6m diameter region, determine the optimal z focus position, map formed beam pattern shape and sidelobes, and characterize PAF gain stability, aperture efficiency, and beam equivalent system noise temperature. A 19 element PAF will be mounted on a three-axis mechanical positioner, moved throughout the AO focal region, and at each array position, the telescope will be pointed to a regular grid of angles to scan a bright calibrator point source across the PAF field of view, while recording signal data from the array for post-processing.
