HI Content of Distant Galaxy Clusters

As the redshift increases, it gets ever more difficult to detect the HI signal from individual galaxies, as their angular separation from companions decreases. This is a pilot study to evaluate the feasibility of observing rich clusters of galaxies instead. There is both diversity in the abundance of gas-rich galaxies in clusters, as well as an increase in the percentage of blue galaxies with redshift. We have chosen two clusters at z=0.09 and 0.18 to evaluate the problems and utility of this approach.
