Commissioning and Test Observations for a Full-Stokes ALFA Continuum Survey

(GALFACTS)
ABSTRACT:
We propose to observe a test region with the ALFA 7-feed array as part of a program of testing and commissioning for the GALFA Continuum Transit Survey (GALFACTS). We will observe a test field that has been observed previously with the current single-feed L band system under proposal A1863, and carry out calibration observations of point sources. The primary goals of the program are: technical characterization of the properties of the ALFA system with particular emphasis on the polarimetric response, testing and refinement of the proposed GALFACTS observing technique, and development of calibration and imaging methodolgy and data pipeline software. Comparison to lower angular resolution observations of the same regions with the Effelsberg telescope will provide a consistency check on the ALFA results (when degraded to the Effelsberg resolution). The ALFA high angular resolution mages of the diffuse polarized structure from the Galactic Faraday screen will also provide the first science results from polarimetry with the ALFA system.
