A Search for Transient Emission from a 13-minute Detached White Dwarf Eclips-

ing Binary
ABSTRACT:
We propose a search for time-variable radio emission from a detached white-dwarf binary with a 12.75-minute orbit. The ob jects' separation ( 0.1 solar radius) suggests the likelihood of coherent emission analogous to that from the Jupiter-Io system, solar bursts, brown dwarfs, and flare stars by particles accelerated by unipolar induction or from magnetic reconnection. Roche-lobe overflow is not occurring, so the system is clear of dense plasma that would otherwise prevent radio wave propagation. We will search for time variable radiation, including bursts, through analysis of dynamic spectra on time scales from 1ms to the 12.75-minute orbital period. We will ~ use a filter template bank sensitive to a range of frequency modulations, like those seen in flare stars and including interstellar dispersion and scintillation, which will be noticeable if any sub-second emission is detected. We will also search for emission that is synchronized with the orbital period.
