Radar Observations of Asteroid 325 Heidelberga

We request 4.5 hours on Nov 17 and 18 to observe the M-asteroid 325 Heidelberga. The M-asteroids are thought to be the exposed metallic cores of disrupted parent bodies. However, of the seven M-class main-belt asteroids observed with radar, only one (216 Kleopatra) is dominantly metallic (Ostro et al. 2000). We are conducting a multi-year radar survey of M-asteroids to determine which are dominated by metallic composition (r1982 and r2025). This is the best opportunity to observe Heidelberga from Arecibo for more than two decades. Our requested time is currently assigned TO and dovetails with the already scheduled r1980 (Benner). We will observe Heidelberga near opposition; its detection will provide a radar cross-section and an estimate of its radar albedo. SNRs are expected to be 3/run if the radar albedo is as low as 0.1 (darker than 70% of main-belt asteroids) and >10 per run if Heidelberga is metallic.
