Proposal Title: Search for AGN Malin Galaxies
ABSTRACT:
This project is to obtain H I measurements of a newly discovered sample of massive, low surface brightness (LSB)
galaxies. These galaxies represent new extremes in M T =L, MHI =L, the ratio of stars to gas, total size and
dynamical mass. This new sample is generated using the fact that massive LSB disks frequently harbor low
luminosity AGN's. By combining the detections in the 2MASS catalog with images from the DPOSS, we are able
to extract a sample of LSB disks with central AGN's (by IR color) as candidates for an extensive sample of
Malin-like disk galaxies. HI detections of this new sample will provide us with redshifts, HI masses and dynamical
masses for a study of the characteristics of these extreme galaxies.
