The thinnest cold HI clouds in the diffuse ISM: II phase

We request 160 hours of observing time to study the new population of cold neutral medium (CNM) clouds. These clouds were discovered last year as having HI column densities 50 times below theoretical and observational expectations. Physical processes responsible for the production of low-column-density clouds are not understood, several interesting theoretical suggestions have been proposed very recently. This is the second and final phase of our successful observing program a2052 which had a high detection rate and showed that the newly discovered CNM clouds are surprisingly common in the interstellar medium. Our aim is to build a proper statistical sample that can be compared with recent theoretical and numerical predictions.
