Do Converging Flows Matter?

We request 4.8 GHz spectroscopic mapping of the star forming region NGC 1333 to search for the physical signature of converging flows in regulating star formation. Using previous Arecibo data, we found no evidence for converging flows affecting the dynamical state of these cores. The proposed mapping extends the search for converging flows (1) to cores in a wider range of evolutionary states and (2) to the filamentary structure ubiquitous through star forming regions. We will pair Arecibo mapping with a 14.5 GHz map made at the GBT to provide direct densitometry at the scale of cores and filaments along 100 lines of sight through the cloud. By combining this densitometry with a wealth of ancillary data, we can directly measure the pressure throughout the region. Converging flows predict significant ram pressure at the boundaries of these ob jects and a continued failure to find such a binding pressure would undermine this theoretical paradigm.
