Mapping Extended HI around two THINGS galaxies

One of the outstanding questions in astronomy today is how galaxies obtain the gas that they need to continue forming stars for longer than a few gigayears. Simulations suggest that for low mass galaxies in low density environments gas should remain cool while it is accreted along filaments from the intergalactic medium, while for higher mass galaxies the gas is shock heated before cooling onto the galaxy disk. Because of the low column density and diffuse nature of these filaments, they are only detectable with a single-dish radio telescope. We have been trying to identify this cold mode accretion through a Green Bank Telescope HI survey of the THINGS galaxies. We are proposing here to use ALFA to confirm the GBT results for NGC 925 and DDO 154 and map their extended HI distribution.
