The HI properties of the faintest Blue Compact Dwarf, SA 68 6597

We prop ose to measure the HI content and linewidth of SA 68-6597 in order to b etter constrain its total mass and p otential for future star formation. SA 68-6597 is the lowest luminosity, MB -12.4 mag, blue compact dwarf or HI I galaxy known, and, based on optical emission linewidths, 28 km/s, amongst the lowest mass galaxies undergoing star formation. This linewidth may not reflect, however, the rotation of the gas but may trace outflows as well. The HI linewidth will trace the more extended gaseous comp onent providing a b etter constraint on the total mass of the galaxy. Measuring the HI mass will also tell us how much fuel for star formation is available in SA 68-6597. Combining our Keck and HST data with this Arecib o HI data will p ermit us to determine if SA 68-6597 is the precursor of a Carina-like dwarf spheroidal galaxy or another, more massive class of galaxy.
