Rapid observations of the relativistic binary pulsar J1906+07

We have recently identified one of the new pulsars in the P-ALFA precursor survey, J1906+07, to b e a relativistic binary system with an orbital p erio d of 3.98 hr. Based on follow-up observations carried out at Jo drell Bank, and archival observations in the Parkes multib eam survey, we have so far measured the relativistic p eriastron advance of the system which implies that the companion is either another neutron star or a white dwarf. Here we request a series of deep Arecib o observations to p erform a search for radio pulsations from the companion, measure the p osition to sub-arcmin precision and characterize the radio sp ectrum of this exciting new system. We exp ect the binary to b e an excellent new lab oratory for testing general relativity and, as such, an extremely high-profile result for the ALFA system. We plan to publish the prop osed observations rapidly as part of a discovery pap er b etween the P-ALFA consortium and memb ers of the Parkes multib eam survey team.
