Proposal Title: A search for newly born OH/IR stars
ABSTRACT:
About 75% of color-selected, jb j>10 deg, circumstellar shells do not exhibit 1612 MHz masers, though many of
these OH/IR star color "mimics" are O- rich Miras. For over 10 years the unexpected existence of mimics has
highlighted a serious gap in our understanding of circumstellar shells. Now, in V1511 Cyg, we have a prototype for
demonstrating that many of them are likely to be the immediate precursors of OH/IR stars. This proposal is aimed
at increasing condence in this view by discovering more newly born OH/IR stars.
