Proposal Title: Completion of 430MHz observations of di#use continuum emission in the Coma
Supercluster (following proposal a1731, and omitting 330 MHz).
ABSTRACT:
The scientific objective is to search for di#use radio emission on scales of 1 6 Mpc within the Coma supercluster,
to test theories of collective galactic central BH feedback of magnetic and particle energy into the intergalactic
medium (IGM) in a galaxyoverdense region of the lowz universe. The energetics of large, extended radio source
lobes confirm that such feedback should occur. If so, then CR particle acceleration may occur in situ in the IGM.
Such is known to happen within Mpc scaleradio lobes, but the acceleration mechanism is unknown. This mystery
is the ''holy grail'' of these observations, and is a major puzzle of contemporary astrophysics. By combining the
Arecibo A1731 observations (mostly, but not completely done in 2003 at 430MHz) with deep (2003) DRAO
sysnthesis images at 408 MHz, we have obtained tentative detections of such emission. The combined images
represent the state of the art, and will bridge to the capabilities of the planned LOFAR telescope. In the present
proposal we request time to complete the overlap between the Arecibo and DRAO imaging fields.
