Proposal Type: General Category: Observation Category: Total Time Requested: Prop osal Title: ABSTRACT:
The scientific ob jective is to search for diffuse radio emission on scales of 1 - 6 Mp c within the Coma sup ercluster, to test theories of collective galactic central BH feedback of magnetic and particle energy into the intergalactic medium (IGM) in a galaxy-overdense region of the low-z universe. The energetics of large, extended radio source lob es confirm that such feedback should o ccur. If so, then CR particle acceleration may o ccur in situ in the IGM. Such is known to happ en within Mp c scale-radio lob es, but the acceleration mechanism is unknown. This mystery is the "holy grail" of these observations, and is a ma jor puzzle of contemp orary astrophysics. By combining the Arecib o A1731 observations (mostly, but not completely done in 2003 at 430MHz) with deep (2003) DRAO sysnthesis images at 408 MHz, we have obtained tentative detections of such emission. The combined images represent the state of the art, and will bridge to the capabilities of the planned LOFAR telescop e. In the present prop osal we request time to complete the overlap b etween the Arecib o and DRAO imaging fields.
