Proposal Title: Calibration of new DMSP satellite optical instruments using the Arecibo ISR
ABSTRACT:
A new generation of optical instrumentation has been developed for the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program
and its future replacement, NPOES, which is a joint NOAA/DOD Program. The Arecibo Incoherent Scatter Radar
played a large role in calibrating probe-based sensors in the early days of the space age. These new generation
optical instruments, SSULI and SSUSI, will provide new and unique ionospheric/thermospheric tools and must be
properly calibrated. The only realistic way to accomplish this is via the ISR technique. Since the TIMECGM will
be run for most if not all of the requested passes the proposed project will also provide important validation of that
model which plays a key role in the Space Weather Program.

Special Equipment or setup: It is our understanding that the Arecibo allsky imager is available and
we wish that it be operating in a mode suitable for F region studies. We anticipate this includes 6300,
