Proposal Title: 21cm Survey of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies Found in the KISS Fields
ABSTRACT:
Historically, galaxy catalogs have been biased in favor of high surface brightness galaxies. It is now apparent that
these objects represent only part of the full range of galaxy parameter space, and this under-representation of low
surface brightness galaxies limits our understanding of galaxy evolution. As part of the e ort to fairly sample the
low surface brightness galaxy population, we are constructing a wide- eld, CCD-selected catalog of galaxies with
23< 0
B < 26, based on the KISS 1 database. This survey is unique in combining digital detectors with 145 degree 2
of aerial coverage, allowing selection of a complete, well-de ned catalog sampling a statistically signi cant number
of low surface brightness galaxies across large scale structures. To address the most compelling questions of low
surface brightness space densities and environmental e ects requires distances and HI masses, which we here
propose to obtain. With the addition of these data, this catalog will become a valuable tool for probing the role of
low surface brightness galaxies in galaxy evolution.
