Radar Observations of Six Near-Earth Asteroids

Between December 2008 and May 2009 six near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) can be observ ed using radar at Arecibo. Detailed shape models are expected to result from five of these. Analysis of asteroid shape models has led to a revolution in our understanding of surface processes, binary formation, spin and obliquity evolution of small asteroids. Radar observations of the shape and spin characteristics tell us about the internal structure of these ob jects, whether strong solid rocks, or strengthless rubble piles. The prevalence of binary asteroids has changed our understanding of the dynamic processes affecting NEAs. The recent discovery of a triple system shows that new types of ob jects are still being found. Only through groundbased observations can we hope to understand the diverse population of NEAs. Radar observations continue to be one of the most powerful tools for probing the diverse population of near-Earth asteroids.
