Proposal Title: Radar Imaging of NearEarth Asteroid 2003 TH2
ABSTRACT:
We propose to obtain highresolution (15m) imaging of nearEarth asteroid 2003 TH2 in October of 2003. Recent
experience has shown that there is an enormous variety in the shapes, radar reflectivities, and rotation states of
nearEarth asteroids. Good imaging opportunities for relatively small objects such as 2003 TH2 (90m diameter)
occur only a few times per year. Radar imaging can help determine the internal structure by giving us information
about the size, spin rate and even density in the case of binary systems. Recently a satellite was discovered around
2003 SS84, which is similar in size (100m). This is the smallest satellite system known to date, so we particularly
want to increase the number of 100m objects we observe to see what the occurence rate of binaries is at this scale.
We have the opportunity to also obtain spectroscopy of this asteroid which will enhance the science return from the
radar images by linking the composition to the shape and spin.
