Backup Observations of Comet 103P/Hartley 2 of OH at 1667 MHz

Comet 103P/Hartley 2 is the target of the EPOXI spacecraft flyby on November 5, 2010. Arecibo radar has obtained position information, helpful to planning the imaging sequences, and orbital improvement. Radar images show an elongated bilobate nucleus. Radio OH observations help to determine the amount of water in the cometary coma, and is one of the few ways to measure water from the ground without atmospheric interference. The radar observations take precedence, but if the system has failures, the OH observations are a way to use the time productively and make important science contributions. The GBT has been monitoring the OH production of Hartley 2 under a joint program. We would like two simultaneous days of observations for cross calibration, since the GBT beam is much larger, and thus averages over a larger time period of the comet's variable activity. Other observers have seen jets and variable gas and dust jets, so measuring the water production on a daily basis will be an important baseline for comparing the other less abundant species in the coma.
