Additional Time on Comet LINEAR 2003 K4: Testing ALFA at OH Frequencies

ALFA detection of 18-cm OH lines presents new science opportunities. A bright comet is available as an extended OH line source, 25 mJy predicted flux in late July and early August 2004. We propose to extend our existing time request of 4 days under pro ject A1851, by 30 additional hours to use ALFA in OH mode, and do additional testing while in the OH configuration. Since changing modes is time-consuming, extended testing now would be the most efficient way to determine the ALFA capabilities so that appropriate proposals can be made when ALFA is generally available. The results of these observations will be available immediately to the scientific community.
