Proposal Title: HI Observations of Dwarf Galaxy Candidates in the Leo I Group Region
ABSTRACT:
The Leo I group is a nearby density enhancement characterized by a low velocity dispersion but containing a local
density enhancement that supports the presence of bright E/SO galaxies. It thus presents an interesting
environment in which to study di#erences among the low luminosity dwarf populations. We propose to conduct HI
line observations of a set of dwarf galaxies believed to be group members identified in a wide area (120 square
degree) survey of the area of sky containing Leo I. In addition to verifying their group membership, the
observations will determine the HI content and rotation velocity and thus help to reveal further their relation to
group substructures. In combination with future EALFA survey results, these observations will allow an
understanding of the correspondence of optical and HI selection among the lowest mass objects in this particularly
interesting volume of the local universe.
