Proposal Title: EVOLUTIONARY TRACKS OF ACTIVE SPIRAL GALAXIES
ABSTRACT:
Recent work has shown that the disks of Seyfert host galaxies follow trends of HI mass fraction, surface brightness,
and M/L ratio similar to, but oset from, those in normal spirals. We propose new HI observations of 62 active and
normal spiral galaxies to investigate: 1) the neutral gas abundance in Seyferts and starbursts; 2) trends of HI mass
fraction in Seyferts and starbursts with M/L and disk surface brightness; 3) dierences among active and normal
spirals. Such a study can assess the validity of disk evolution in spirals and help understand how galaxies form, and
how active and normal spirals evolve.
