An Initial HI Survey of the Taurus Region

We propose to carry out a high spectral resolution survey of a 60 square degree region of the Taurus Molecular Cloud. This will provide an essential, and heretofore nonexistent data set for comparing the distributions of atomic and molecular material in this nearby low-mass star forming region. This comparison is fundamental for determining the ages of molecular clouds and the overall time scale for star formation and tracing the relationship between atomic and molecular gas, and whether, for example, it is plausible that the molecular clouds in this region were formed by shock compression of the atomic gas. Our HI maps will be compared with similar maps of 12CO and 13CO already obtained. The HI Taurus data will be obtained with the GALFA specctrometer working with the ALFA front end, while the WAPP system will be used for commensal observations of external galaxies in this direction whose detection is hampered by the large visual extinction in this direction.
