ALFALFA Followup: Enigmatic Virgo Clouds

The ALFALFA survey has detected several HI cloud complexes without optical counterparts in the periphery of the Virgo cluster, near the outer boundary of the hot X-ray emitting gas. The extensive HI distribution, high Virgocentric velocity, and possible connection to nearby Virgo spirals suggests that these may be dramatic examples of galaxy harassment, possibly combined with ram pressure stripping. To complement the ALFALFA survey observations, we request here a small amount of telescope time with LBW designed to corroborate the ALFALFA findings.
