Proposal Title: Undergraduate Student Observations of Isolated Dwarf Galaxies
ABSTRACT:
We request Lband HI observations of isolated dwarf galaxies to be executed by undergraduate student observers as
part of the Yale University course Astronomy 255 ''Astrophysical Research Methods''. This semesterlong course is
the foundation of the Yale Astronomy and Astrophysics major. The course goal is to prepare students for
professional research, covering data reduction methods, astrostatistics and comparison to theoretical models. The
class will study radio telescopes and observing techniques, and then travel to Arecibo during Fall break (Oct
2224). Here we request 6 hours of Lband observations so that each student can observe a unique dwarf galaxy.
Students will be responsible for data reduction and measuring the HI properties of their object. The results will be
folded into a larger program to study to gas properties of low mass galaxies in isolated environments. Students will
be involved in the full scientific process, from chosing targets to writing up their results.
