Mesospheric Scattering and Aeronomy

Pioneering observations were made in the mesosphere using Arecibo radar. There are still many unanswered questions starting with the nature of scattering, dynamics and the involved aeronomy. We propose to perform additional measurements beyond what is performed regularly in order to understand these issues. The spectra of the signal scattered from the mesosphere (60 to 90 KM.) will be measured with good height resolution (better than 300 meters) and using phase coding (BPSK, Barker). The radar should be pointing vertical for most of the observations. Some additional data from the dual beam (at an oblique angle) would be preferable
