Rotationally Excited OH Lines in OH Megamaser Galaxies

We prop ose to observe a flux-limited sample of OH megamaser galaxies for rotationally excited OH absorption lines at 5 and 6 cm. Observations are designed to provide robust, detailed constraints on the physical environment of OHMs and on OHM mo dels. Theoretical mo dels will have to contend with not only the ratios b etween the main 5, 6, and 18 cm transitions, but also with the hyp erfine ratios within each OH rotation state. We include a control sample of 18 cm OH absorption systems to allow us to differentiate b etween prop erties of interacting starburst galaxies in general and prop erties sp ecific to OH megamasers. These multi-use observations will also provide new constraints on the evolution of the fine structure constant which are complementary to other observations planned for Arecib o. We prop ose to observe 11 OHMs and 9 OH absorption systems for 1 hour each in two frequency settings, for a total time request of 50 hours.
