Proposal Title: Radar Observations of Io at 12.6 cm
ABSTRACT:
We propose 12.6 cm radar observations of Io in January 2002. Our objective is to look at the radar surface
properties of Io over a range of central longitudes a nd compare any spatial changes in the radar return with
topography of the satell ite. Previous Arecibo data for four longitudes show that there is signi cant sp atial change
in radar surface properties, but these observations were short and we can improve the signal to noise by at least a
factor of two. We have requeste d observing dates that cover a wide geographic area on the satellite. In additi on,
two of the central longitudes will fall on Pele and Prometheus, two of the l argest volcanoes. If these observations
prove interesting, we plan to pursue a larger program during the next few years that would cover more of the
surface.
