Proposal Title: Surface Properties of Titan from Arecibo Radar Observations
ABSTRACT:
We are requesting Sband planetary radar time for twelve observations of Titan in January, 2006. The major
objectives of the proposed new observations are the investigation of the properties and occurrence statistics of the
specular echoes as they relate to the imaging results being obtained by various instruments on the Cassini
spacecraft. In the Cassini era, the Arecibo 13 cm wavelength observations are still providing complementary
information about the surface properties and composition of Titan due to: 1) the 13 cm wavelength vs the 2 cm
wavelength of the Cassini radar; 2) coverage of di#erent areas; 3) di#erent data types with Arecibo providing
information about the presence of specular echoes and the polarization properties of the reflected signal. In
January, 2006 the track of the subEarth location will be close to 18S, five degrees north of the track in 2005 and
will pass over some of the dark terrain south of the Huygens landing site.
