Surface Properties of Titan from Arecibo Radar Observations

We are requesting S-band planetary radar time for twelve observations of Titan in January, 2006. The ma jor ob jectives of the prop osed new observations are the investigation of the prop erties and o ccurrence statistics of the sp ecular echo es as they relate to the imaging results b eing obtained by various instruments on the Cassini spacecraft. In the Cassini era, the Arecib o 13 cm wavelength observations are still providing complementary information ab out the surface prop erties and comp osition of Titan due to: 1) the 13 cm wavelength vs the 2 cm wavelength of the Cassini radar; 2) coverage of different areas; 3) different data typ es with Arecib o providing information ab out the presence of sp ecular echo es and the p olarization prop erties of the reflected signal. In January, 2006 the track of the sub-Earth lo cation will b e close to 18S, five degrees north of the track in 2005 and will pass over some of the dark terrain south of the Huygens landing site.
