Proposal Title: VLBA-Radar Observations of Asteroid 1996 FG3
ABSTRACT:
Synthesis imaging of a radar illuminated target can provide unambiguous images, supplementing standard
delay-Doppler mapping. Recent changes to the VLBA correlator incorporating near eld corrections and low
bandwidths have made such observations feasible. We are requesting 3 hours of time on November 21, 1998 to
carry out the rst Arecibo-VLBA observation of a small near Earth asteroid, 1996 ~
FG3, as it passes within almost
0.04 AU of the Earth.
