Arecibo Radar Orbit Refinement of Near-Earth Asteroid 99942 Apophis in June

of 2013
ABSTRACT:
We propose radar observations of near-Earth asteroid 99942 Apophis in June of 2013 to further refine its orbit and to facilitate future detection of the Yarkovsky effect, which would help provide an estimate of the asteroid's mass. Apophis will approach within 0.243 AU of Earth in June and Arecibo is the only radar facility that has sufficient sensitivity to detect it at that distance.
