Proposal Type: General Category: Sub-Category: Observation Category: Total Time Requested: Prop osal Title: ABSTRACT:
This is an urgent prop osal for S-band radar astrometry of near-Earth asteroid 2004 MN4 in January 2005. As of this writing, on 2004 Decemb er 22, JPL orbit solution numb er 3 indicates that this ob ject has a formal probability of 0.6 p ercent of impacting Earth in April, 2029. This is by far the largest impact probability currently known for any Potentially Hazardous Asteroid and it places this ob ject at nearly 4 on the Torino impact scale. Torino scale 4 is defined as meriting attention and it describ es an ob ject large enough to cause regional devastation were it to impact Earth. Radar observations could significantly reduce the uncertainties due to their orthogonality to, and much finer precision than, optical astrometry. The o dds are that radar astrometry for an ob ject with this value on the Torino scale will significantly improve the orbit and reduce the formal risk estimate to zero, but we will not know unless we do the observations.
