Proposal Title: High Brightness Temperature Phenomena in Active Stars: Testing Solar/Stellar
Connection
ABSTRACT:
We propose a new investigation of L-band bursts in dMe are stars and active binary systems with the upgraded
Arecibo Observatory. The increased bandwidth and sensitivity available with the L-wide receiver and WAPP
correlator will enable better constraint of the observable burst parameters: brightness temperature, relative
bandwidth, time duration, and levels of circular polarization. We can examine rapidly varying phenomena on time
scales of 5 milliseconds or greater, still retaining suфcient frequency resolution and sensitivity to characterize burst
properties and constrain possible emission mechanisms. The properties of soft X-ray and gyrosynchrotron emission
in dMe are stars and active binaries show more similarities to each other than to the Sun; they also show
apparently similar behavior of coherent phenomena at low frequencies. Better time-resolution observations are
necessary to determine whether the physical mechanism is the same, and to what extent solar coherent bursts can
be used as a template. Arecibo observations will be carried out in tandem with L- and X-band VLA observations
to con rm the stellar nature of L-band ares, and investigate multi-wavelength are correlations.
