Proposal Title: A survey of high-mass star forming regions in the 8 GHz rotationally excited OH
lines
ABSTRACT:
This is a resubmission of proposal A1722, in which we also address the referees' comments about the previous
proposal. The excitation scheme of OH for sources associated with young star forming regions is still unclear.
During the past years a number of surveys of excited OH have concentrated on the 6 ~
GHz and 4GHz states, but no
surveys toward star forming regions exist to date of the 7.8 and 8.1GHz lines. We thus propose to perform the rst
pilot survey of the 2Pi1/2 J=3/2 and J=5/2 OH main and satellite lines toward a small sample of high-mass star
forming regions visible from Arecibo, currently the only instrument which can be used to detect such faint lines in a
reasonable observing time. These observations, and particularly the potential detection of the satellite lines, will be
used to set tighter constraints on models, which so far can be compared only with the observations toward
W3(OH). A better understanding of the pumping mechanism and excitation of OH would then be used to
discriminate between di erent environments with di erent physical conditions.
