With the ob jective of improved accuracy in the estimation of the ionospheric parameters such as electron density, electron temp erature, ion temp erature and comp osition, we prop ose to conduct new F-region exp eriments in Arecib o, where amplitude or phase mo dulated pulses will b e utilized as the transmitted pulses. Parameter extraction problem, then, will b e addressed as a new inverse technique which involves the deconvolution of the ionospheric lag profiles prior to nonlinear least-squares fitting, which allows the range smearing to b e completely removed (using regularization techniques). Several observations were made in 2004, where two heuristically selected amplitude mo dulated pulses were transmitted. Although the results were improved over those of a long pulse, the optimal pulse co ding schemes remains op en with p otential for further improvements. This prop osal requests the telescop e time to run new F-region exp eriments, where optimally designed co ded pulses are used in transmission. This pro ject is part of a PhD thesis and involves Professors Farzad Kamalabadi and Erhan Kudeki of University of Illinois.
