Radar observations of long-lost asteroid 1937 UB (Hermes)

We prop ose to observe asteroid 1937 UB (Hermes), a large (1-2 km) ob ject of considerable historical and dynamical interest. Hermes was recovered to day after eluding astronomers for 66 years since its 1937 discovery. Arecib o observations during the current Octob er apparition will refine the orbit and may elucidate a p eculiar dynamical connection with another large near-Earth ob ject. The radar data will also provide an imp ortant physical characterization of this p otentially hazardous asteroid. Three blo cks of 2.5 hours each are requested.
