Proposal Title: Completing the Radar Survey of Fifty Main-Belt Asteroids
ABSTRACT:
We propose to complete an ongoing two-year radar survey of fty main-belt asteroids, extending the project for one
year to compensate for instrumental problems encountered throughout 2000. In its rst thirteen months the survey
has achieved a high detection rate, with 17 targets observed and 15 detected, including the rst-ever radar
detections of D-class and T-class asteroids. This survey, once extended and completed, should more than double
the radar-detected sample, providing otherwise unavailable information about these objects' mineralogical and
structural characteristics and meteoritic associations. Speci c key questions to be addressed involve the nature of
S-class asteroids (di erentiated or chondritic), the near-surface bulk densities of the primitive carbonaceous classes,
and the apparent dispersion of metal concentrations among M-class asteroids. The completed survey also will
strongly constrain how the severity of surface roughness at decimeter scales depends on class and size, with
implications for ideas about collisional evolution.
