Probing the small angle HVC population, a pilot for ALFA

We request 40 hours of time on the Arecib o telescop e to survey a 3.5 deg 2 area to prob e the small-angle HVC p opulation. The pro ject will also serve in part as a pilot for the up coming ALFA programme. The HIPASS and Leiden-Dwingelo o Hi surveys have led to impressive statistical analyses of the HVC p opulation, although due to their relatively large b eamwidths and small collecting areas, they lack the ability to detect the small-area HVC p opulation (typically the Compact HVC p opulation) where area(HVC)< 0.08deg 2 . In particular, the area(HVC) distribution function from the HIPASS dataset has shown a turn over at area(HVC)0.08 deg 2 and the extent to which this b ehavior is real, or is a selection effect is unknown. Either case has significant ramifications for understanding the distributions and statistical prop erties of the HVC p opulation and for understanding the pro cesses resp onsible for the formation of galaxy groups.
